The beneficial effects of green tea.

As the weather becomes more fall like and the temperatures drop, I start to crave warm soothing drinks.   I love coffee but too much can really have an effect on your nerves. not to mention all the extra calories in the fall pumpkin spice lattes.   So, I was visiting the Google Root café yesterday and was offered a warm green tea latte.  “Yum that sure sounds good. “  I’ve heard so much buzz about green tea so I decided to dig into the research.  Here’s what I found out:

Green tea contains a type of antioxidant called EGCG a type of catechin.  Consuming these antioxidants can have huge health benefits.  To top the list they can boost your metabolism, help prevent certain cancers and cardiovascular disease.   Yes, green tea does contain caffeine but at amounts 1/3 found in coffee.  These beneficial effects were seen consuming 4-5 cups a day.  Great way to hydrate as well!

The types of cancers that have been studied include: lung, colon, esophagus, mouth, stomach, small intestine, kidney, pancreas, and mammary glands.  Wow that’s an impressive list.

Yes! Green tea is a metabolism booster.  What exactly does that mean?  Well you can increase the amount of calories burned during the day by about 4.5%.  Not a ton, but hey every calorie counts.  Say you need 2,000 calories per day to maintain your weight, drinking green tea would give you an additional 90 calories burned.  That’s an extra mile on the treadmill!

So this afternoon venture out and enjoy a green tea latte or a simply steamed cup.  Happy Sipping!
